D. Prepare to be an important ACTOR.
Actors are spell binders and entertainers. An actor's job is storytelling. Actors must learn to understand screenplays. If they don't know what the story is about, their acting is trash. Actors must know what story they are telling to be able to use all their resources. An actor has to serve the audience and work for the author. Remember, half of your performance comes from the other person. Let go, don't act carefully. Approach your work with body relaxed so the emotion can take over. In life we struggle to overcome emotions, the job of the actor is to be swimming in them. The actor feels the emotion and thinks the objective to become the character, then reaches for the words to make the character look real. The actor is an entertainer. How do you relate your acting to the story? Can't just be in your head, physicalize it. Don't fall in love with the little things. Have the whole thing, then go detail by detail. Always decide what the story is about, not what actor does best. Actor makes choices.
Know where you are trying to get to in story, set the path. Don't rob it from the audience. Let as much control go as possible. Don't play a man not knowing his situation. Read about times and places; make decisions. Don't wait for a director to tell you anything. He doesn't have time. Moves come from the actor. Do not do things for your own comfort. The actor follows the truth of the author. Good actors know when to do it, how to do it and make the right choices. Trust your talent, don't instruct yourself. Actor makes choices. Actors can't make pictures. You have to be involved in scene. Don't watch yourself doing the scene. In part you have to be involved, you can't be in two places at once with scene and audience. Always decide what the story is about, not what actors do best. Great actors are inventive. Convince yourself you are in a room with no audience. Your emotion: determination and objective: to learn acting. NEWSFLASH: An actor has to be trained to be in the world of illusion.
Do acting all on impulse. Don't look for psychological conclusions as an actor. Have to know humanity. The character isn't simply an extension of yourself. Give the director hints, then he will buy it. Always decide what the story is about, not what actor does best. Know where you are in the play. No awareness of self, that is good acting. If you go back in your past, you are aware of self. Total abandon from actor. Instrument vibrating with feeling. Only actors turn and talk to each other. Love the craft and principles, not the image. Work on audiences heart string. Audience is sentimental. What makes an important actor? Find what other people don't. Actor has to have a profound understanding of humans.
Everything you do must have a purpose. Make the scene visual. Actor convince yourself something is real. Controlled obsession. Say it is real, it is real. For the director, the best staging comes from good actors. There is no reason for logic. There is prototype. Actors must love themselves; I'm great, I'm amazing. Actor must get away from bag of tricks, find your own acting. Tune in on audience with part as actor. Communication with audience, be aware.
Don't do the same things over from other parts, every project is new. Be careful not to know what the character doesn't know. With bigger emotions, the actor must be more relaxed. Keep audience off balance don't let them know what is coming next. Always find the unexpected. Last resource of actor is yelling. When actor is out of their depth they start yelling. Actor must not yell. Audience becomes immune to the yelling. You just can't play the surface, humans are more involved.
Don't self indulge, remain the actor until you step up to the camera. As actor you can listen to instruction, but not in character. Do not fall in love with one thing, try many different ways as an actor. Pick objectives you can do something about. Actor has to find the words. Actors always want to look when they speak. Be careful not to know what the character doesn't know. Don't do things under insecurity, audience is not interested in actor. As an actor you must reveal everything about the character.
Don't smile: don't look like you are having more fun than the audience. Don't let the thought get into your head to make "pictures". Actor has to get used to the world of illusions. Don't always be touching something. Your talent will work, how advanced you are will show. Character can be out of control, not the actor. Beware of what you do well. It is a great temptation.
Let your talent help make choices, it's better than just reasoning it out. No awareness of self, that is good acting. If you go back in your past, you are aware of self. Total abandon from actor. Instrument vibrating with feeling. Avoid trying to show the audience what you want them to feel. Getting an audience to react the way you want it too. Every actor must find their quality. "He acts like he looks." As actors don't lean toward each other. Don't sell top of head. They evaluate in the editing room what to use. If actor isn't doing anything, it will be cut out for something else.
Don't always have the "need" to go hang on the other actor. Avoid the cliches. Actor must get compassion into their acting. Let things effect them. Thinking objective saves you from making a lot of mistakes. Self-motive is the core of our behavior. Don't find what is nice to play, but find the motive of the character. A good actor gets further into the character. Actors tend to do what they do well, you must follow the author's story. When it is working for you, don't do anything, don't make it better. The hardest thing for an artist is when to know when to stop, when is it enough. Don't guck it up.
Can't sound like an actor who knows words. Don't think how it's going to sound, ever. Hardest thing to do is to relate to other people. Don't make yourself comfortable, don't bring your personal help. Actors are interpreter artists, not to re-invent the story. As an actor, make your own choices. Never argue with the director, just say, could I show you something. Fill the silences is actor's job.
Actors are born with the aptitude. A person has to have the aptitude to act. Never make a comment on your character. Don't self indulge, remain the actor until you step up to the camera. As actor you can listen to instruction, but not in character. When you enter a scene, always come from somewhere. Don't walk over the diamond field. Know the perimeter of what you can do, so you aren't miscast. Perimeters of what you are right for, what you suggest to the audience. Otherwise, it's work, work and it still doesn't work.
Just don't act with voice, use whole body. The more inventive you are, the better actor you are. Young actors have to stay of away from trying to play whole story in each scene.
Don't let the thought get into your head to make "pictures". When it is working for you, don't do anything, don't make it better. The hardest thing for an artist is when to know when to stop, when is it enough. Don't guck it up.
Underplay doesn't make you natural. Let the audience decide if you're natural. Obligation to the playwright, must be understood. Don't be an actor who needs a few minutes to prepare before "action" is called. Instant action is used. As an actor you have to keep working at the business and keep knocking at the doors. Idea of who your character is, not just using yourself. Actors have to know what to do to help themselves. Must achieve immediacy. Director can not read lines to actors.
Stop acting, get involved emotionally, can't act with brain, must be feeling. Actors are called on today not to be careful like the old days. Don't look for psychological conclusions as an actor. Actor must be courageous.
Character can be out of control, but not the actor. Actor must be in a sense of mischief. Just have a general idea of scene. Ammo given to actors is the emotion and objectives. Director then let's the actors go. Director measure the actors truth. Did the audience accept it. Is it going the way of the story? Director gives red light if it is phony or fake. Understand the audience out there. Major part of actor's work. Don't think each person individual. Audience is a herd reaction; unified, one unit, one group. A mass of people reacting. They want uniform morality, such as, we are all against bad. Actors hate to play villains. Director must keep them in place if actor starts being likable. Lead audience down blind hallways. They evaluate in the editing room what to use. If actor isn't doing anything, it will be cut out for something else.
Actors have a will. Adequate actors do their thing, even the triumph of no talent. Reach someone with your will, not your voice: quiet. Writer gives story, character and dialogue. Actor then gives it life. Remember to not act dialogue. The actor must find out what is the stress put on his character. The character can be out of control, not the actor. Actor must be articulate. Don't get tense as actors, hands must be relaxed. Don't play the effect, you cry audience won't cry. Your emotion: determination and objective: to learn acting. The actor can't start seeing their character, because they will imitate the character, start to walk next to character. It turns the actor into a puppeteer.
Learn how not to lose the audience if you're the protagonist. Audience is not going to be interested in actor enjoying himself more. If I do this, is it possible? Director must keep actors from wanting to be liked by the audience. Everyone has their area of funny. In staging, be a well trained actor, a director won't tell you. A good director will say, "let's try it". He won't tell you marks until after actors do it. People after catastrophe: actor is organized, a person at that moment is disorganized. If it is not there, you cannot teach somebody to be an an actor. When watching a movie, watch for essence of what they are doing, that makes it real. Don't try and copy.
Actor must know where his/her character fit into story. Actors always being relax in emotion. Whatever you do stay loose. Approach your work with body relaxed so the emotion can take over. As an actor you must reveal everything about the character. Explore the people. What is the thing that bonds the people. Don't be an actor showing off... Work with emotion. (Both actors were aware that they were in a comedy. They were kidding their characters). Don't make fun of character. Audience's imagine more in their head than you can ever act out. Audience will do it for you, their imagination is great. Avoid becoming a great thinker. The trouble with people who are talented is, they become great thinkers.
Don't make a heart breaking speech in a heartbreaking manner. Don't wait for a director to tell you anything. He doesn't have time. When planning a tragic scene, the actor must know how much is the scene working for them, then lay back. In life we struggle to overcome emotions, the job of the actor is to be swimming in them. Trouble with great artists they become great thinkers. As long as you're conscious of what is going on, you won't hit the mark. Power of the actor: how to make the audience stop laughing? Actors have a tendency to love moments, business and gestures. If it is not there, you cannot teach somebody to be an actor.
"In the end, it can't look like acting." |
